We’re so excited to announce that we’ve just released a new product to the Flex fam: Our much-anticipated Flex REUSABLE Disc. Our customers have been asking for it for years, but we needed to take our time to make sure the design was perfect. And, sure, ‘perfect’ might be an impossibility—but we think we’re pretty darn close.
Here’s what to know and what to love about the all-new Flex Reusable Disc.
How is Flex Reusable Disc different from the original Flex Disc?
First and foremost, Flex Reusable Disc is just that—reusable. That means it’s a 100% sustainable, planet-friendly period product that will last for years. Unlike the original Flex Disc, which is single-use only, Flex Reusable Disc can be washed and reworn (so you can skip those monthly trips to the pharmacy).
It’s made with 100% medical-grade silicone and features dual silicone construction. That’s a fancy way of saying that we used two different grades of silicone: One that’s super soft and pliable while still being surprisingly durable (for the catch) and another that’s firm and resilient, mimicking the feel of our original disc’s ComfortSeal™ rim.
While many other silicone discs on the market are made with a single grade of silicone, Flex Reusable Disc was designed to replicate the construction of our original, disposable disc—but with reusable materials. This intentional design helps the disc pop open fully once inserted and keeps it snugly in place between the posterior fornix and pubic bone. Overall, we can thank dual silicone construction for easier insertion and a more comfortable fit.
The Reusable Disc is shaped just like the original Flex Disc and is inserted the same way, but it offers a capacity upgrade: It holds up to 70mL of period blood (that’s over 14 teaspoons!), which is the same capacity as 6+ super tampons. Both Flex Disc and Flex Reusable Disc have the same diameter of 69mm.
Wear Flex Reusable Disc for up to 12 hours at a time and enjoy these benefits & more:
- Does not promote the growth of toxic bacteria
- Does not disrupt your vaginal pH
- Designed to help reduce odor and cramps
- Hypoallergenic and made with body-safe medical-grade silicone
- Not linked to toxic shock syndrome (TSS)
Flex Reusable Disc also features our NEW patented insertion notch. This notch, located on the inner rim, helps you form a narrower insertion point that guides the disc easily into the vaginal fornix. It makes placement even easier and helps the disc find its way comfortably beneath your cervix.
Since it’s a reusable product, it will last for years. Keep in mind that the lifespan of the disc varies depending on cleaning and care. As a general rule of thumb, we recommend replacing Flex Reusable Disc every two to three years, or as soon as it begins to show any signs of deterioration (such as powder or film, severe discoloration, persistent odor, etc.).
How do I clean Flex Reusable Disc in between wears?
Taking good care of your Reusable Disc will help to extend its lifespan and keep it clean and fresh for years. Here’s what we recommend:
During your period, remove, empty, and clean your Reusable Disc at least once every 12 hours.
Start with clean hands and grab some mild soap (like Flex Foaming Cleanser). Wait for the water to get nice and warm, then rinse your disc and add a few pumps of cleanser. Use your fingers to massage the entire surface of the disc, including both sides of the rim and catch, and then rinse.
Shake off excess water or let the disc air dry before reinserting. If you’re putting your disc away until your next period, make sure it’s completely dry before storing. Store Flex Reusable Disc in a cool, dry place in its included pouch. Never store your disc in an airtight container.
Once every month or so, it’s a good idea to boil your Reusable Disc to sanitize it. Heat a large pot of water to boiling on the stove. Place the disc in the water and boil for 10 minutes, keeping an eye on it the entire time and stirring occasionally to make sure the disc does not come in contact with the sides or bottom of the pot (as that could melt the silicone). Remove from the pot and let the disc cool and dry completely before storing.
Remember: Never wear Flex Reusable Disc if you have a yeast infection or other vaginal bacterial infection. Resume use only once the infection has completely cleared. If Flex Reusable Disc was inserted during a yeast or bacterial infection, remove it immediately and dispose of it in the trash. Do not attempt to clean and reuse your disc if it was worn during a vaginal infection.
Can I wear it during sex?
Totally. Penetrative and oral sex are both on the table while wearing Flex Reusable Disc. Because it sits in the vaginal fornix, it doesn’t block your vaginal canal.
If you’re wondering how this works based on the amount of ‘free space’ that appears in the diagram below, here’s the deal: During arousal and intercourse, the vagina actually expands and elongates. This means that the disc will stay well out of the way during sex and, in most cases, neither you nor your partner will be able to feel it. There is a chance that one of you may notice the rim—this depends partially on the position and each person’s unique anatomy—but there shouldn’t be any discomfort.
Bonus: You may have a stronger orgasm while wearing the disc. This is because the disc gently rubs against and stimulates the cervix, creating additional sensation and (for some) leading to a cervical orgasm. You’re welcome!
One word of caution: Flex Reusable Disc is not a contraceptive device and will not prevent pregnancy or protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs). You can use it with a condom, but remember there’s always a small risk the condom may not function as intended due to friction. Flex Reusable Disc is also IUD-friendly, however as with any internally worn device, we recommend consulting your doctor first.
